Renewing Your Mind

Ligonier Ministries - Renewing Your Mind

Dr R C Sproul is the founder of Ligonier Ministries - "Renewing Your Mind" (http://www.ligonier.org/)

It is an excellent website, whose stated aim is "to equip Christians to articulate what they believe and why they believe it."

As they put it:

Our foremost desire is to "awaken as many people as possible to the holiness of God by proclaiming, teaching, and defending His holiness in all its fullness." Our vision is to propagate the Reformed faith to the church throughout the world.

In order to accomplish this goal, Ligonier endeavors to provide solid teaching that helps bridge the educational gap between Sunday school and seminary. By making Christian education materials available, Ligonier hopes to encourage Christian laypeople to be transformed by the renewing of their minds so that they will be equipped to serve the church and glorify God (Romans 12:2).

I'm particularly fond of the bite-sized teaching audio clips (not more than 20-30 minutes, delivered in an extremely engaging manner.. Easily understood yet thought-provoking, and always God-glorifying.

Highly recommended, and if your appetite has been whetted, you can download more of Dr Sproul's sermons here.

Pyromaniacs!

Pyromaniacs

No, it's not the name of a new heavy metal band.

It's a team blog by a group of prominent Christians who are out to set the world on fire according to Jeremiah 23:29: "Is not My word like a fire?" says the LORD.

It's great reading and very funny (they're obviously Photoshop experts), yet full of truth and thought-provoking articles.

Sermons by Paul David Washer

Paul David WasherSermons by Paul David Washer

It has often been said that the Puritans were spiritual giants. I love their writings for the way they speak directly to my heart and put into words my own experiences of God and the way He works in our lives.

It is one thing to read a Puritan text (which can be rather dry, and difficult to grasp at times), and another to hear someone preach the very same things with passion, conviction, fear and trembling. Such a preacher is Paul David Washer. His sermons set my soul on fire, and I find myself weeping at times, and listening with rapt attention at others. As he put it himself, if he preaches with the right interpretation of scripture (and I believe he does), then it is no less than God Himself speaking directly to us.

So far I have been listening to the "True Gospel" series, and it has been quite a gripping experience. I am providing direct links to these sermons below:

Part 1: Man apart from God
Part 2: What is the Gospel
Part 3: Conversion
Part 4: Repent and Believe
Part 5: The Narrow Way
Part 6: Acceptance Beloved

Feel free to download them, indeed, feel free to burn them onto CD's and share them. As the website states: "Our desire is to provide the truth to equip the saved and evangelize the lost. Everything is free to download and share to the ends of the earth."

Do explore the rest of the website as well. There are many other preachers and resources available.

Thoughts For Young Men by J.C. Ryle

http://www.gracegems.org/BOOKS/thoughts_for_young_men.htm

I took the liberty to browse through the material by J.C. Ryle at the Grace Gems website, and came across this article topic.

I think it is well deserving for it to be circulated amongst our fellow brethren, in particular the young men (myself included, an "old" young man at that). The address in focus, being that much of the culture of late amongst the younger generation(s) revolves around the premise of seeking and desiring recognition, acceptance; that this article has due intention to bring to the fore the cause(s) for much of the despondency surrounding the matters of youths (not obtaining the recognition they desire).

Henceforth, the sharing of this article is meant as an expression of response and an extension of the exhortations that are biblically inspired.

Book Review - Different by Design

In support of the course "Building a Household of Faith" just put up for notice by WSCS today:

I find it apt to share this book review along the lines of intimate, communal living within familial contexts and according to biblical principles. I believe that the beginnings, that is, fundamentals, that are pertinent to the objectives of the course, quoted below:

"...that examines the state of the family today, and the pressures it is exposed to. It also highlights the urgency for Christian households to get back to God's Word and His design for their families to live victoriously in these trying times...."

require a solid foundational backdrop, and background, that relates the eternal and unseen relationship between God and His creation - of man and woman, in this regard, in terms of His desire, design for them on earth.

Book review - Overcoming the dark side of leadership

Overcoming the dark side of leadershipBook Review - Overcoming the Dark Side of Leadership: The Paradox of Personal Dysfunction
Authors: Gary L. McIntosh and Samuel D. Rima, Sr

This is an apt book that arose amid an alarming trend of leadership failures, notably within the worldwide body of Christ. The presiding assumptions in the development of this book, in summary among these:

1. Every leader suffers from some degree of personal dysfunction.

2. Personal dysfunction, in some form or other, can often serve to drive the individual in desiring to succeed in leadership.

3. Many leaders are not aware of the dark side of their personalities and the personal dysfunctions that drive them.

4. The personal characteristics that drive individuals to succeed and lead often have a shadow side that can cripple them once they become leaders and very often causes significant failure - this is called the "paradox of personal dysfunction in leadership".

5. Scripture addresses the dark side of human personality and the motivations that drive us to achieve, with the purpose of enabling leaders to understand themselves and to overcome the debilitating aspects of their personalities that affect them in leadership. As each individual in the body of Christ grows and matures, it is inevitable that he or she will encounter opportunities and challenges in assuming varying levels and positions of leadership. This book is a worthy read for all leaders and leaders to be.

Growing Deep in God by Edmund Chan - a book review

Written by Dr Susan Loong Li Er, on 15-11-2005

This book chronicles lessons on prayer that Rev Edmund Chan has learnt. The main difference between this and other books on prayer is its emphasis on theology as the background to praying. It is in 4 sections: Getting our theology right, rising above the status quo, learning from the past and growing deeper yet.

The first section is perhaps where this book stands out. Rev Chan takes some pains to explain that in answer to the disciples' request that Jesus teach them how to pray, Jesus not only gave them the Lord's Prayer but also followed up with a parable (Luke 11:5-8) and an abiding principle. The parable which Jesus told is that of the persistent friend in need of three loaves of bread.
